Begin in Rajab. Bloom in Ramaḍān
Dec 25, 2025
Rajab has arrived, and with it comes something beautiful: a beginning. A chance to start and plant something small now that will grow over the coming months.
It really is amazing how Allāh ﷻ has designed the Islamic calendar. Before Ramaḍān arrives - before the intensity, the long fasts, the night prayers - we're given Rajab and Sha'bān. Two sacred months that act as preparation for our souls.
Allāh ﷻ says in the Qur'ān: "Indeed, the number of months with Allāh is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allāh [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred." (Sūrah At-Tawbah, 9:36)
Rajab is one of these four sacred months. And it marks the beginning of our journey towards Ramaḍān.
Plant. Water. Harvest.
Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī رحمه الله explains the rhythm of these three blessed months:
"Rajab is the month of planting the seeds. Sha'bān is the month of watering them. And Ramaḍān is the month of harvesting the fruits."
Rajab = Planting,
Sha'bān = Watering,
Ramaḍān = Harvesting
Not ready? It's okay. A seed starts in the dark, under the dirt, appearing small and still. Whether you feel spiritually strong or a bit weathered by life, just plant the intention. Allāh is aware of the seed long before the world sees the flower.
What Will You Plant This Rajab?
Remember, there are no specific masnūn (prophetic) acts prescribed exclusively for Rajab. No special prayers, no particular fasts that the Prophet ﷺ commanded for this month alone.
And subḥānAllāh, we can learn from this that Rajab calls us to start. To plant small seeds now - habits, intentions, changes - that will grow over the coming months.
So what will you plant?
Begin or increase recitation of the noble Qur'ān each day?
Starting and ending the day with the Sunnah adhkār?
Correcting your tajwīd?
Establishing the ṣalāh you've been missing?
A habit you want to grow - or one you need to let go of?
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allāh are those done consistently, even if they are small." (Bukhārī & Muslim)
Set yourself goals and commit to them between now and Ramaḍān.
This Is Also About Letting Go
Your journey to Allāh isn't just about doing more. Sometimes it's about staying away from what harms you.
What needs to be cleared?
The gossip and backbiting that weighs on your heart. The doomscrolling that steals your time and peace. The shows that numb your soul instead of nourishing it.
Before you can plant something new, you have to make space and clear the soil right? Clear away what's weighing you down so there's space for what you're planting to grow.
Don't Start in First Gear
Shaykh Mawlānā Muḥammad Saleem Dhorat ḥafiẓahullāh gives us this wisdom: preparing for Ramaḍān is like driving a car.
In the months before Ramaḍān, start your engine and build up speed - from first gear, to second, to third. By the time Ramaḍān arrives, you're already in fifth gear, moving smoothly in worship, not starting from a standstill.
If you wait until Ramaḍān to start, you'll spend the first week just trying to get into gear. And by the time you hit your stride, the month is halfway over.
Start now. Build momentum in Rajab. Strengthen it in Sha'bān. So when Ramaḍān comes, you're ready to truly experience it.
The Journey Continues
Rajab is just the beginning. Sha'bān builds on what you've started, and then Ramaḍān arrives.
If you've been preparing - if you've been planting, watering, tending - your heart won't just grow. It will bloom.
Just take one step, and trust that Allāh will meet you where you are.
In a ḥadīth qudsī, Allāh says: "I am as My servant thinks I am, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I remember him in My heart... If he draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him an arm's length. If he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running." (Bukhārī & Muslim)
You take one small step towards Allāh in Rajab, and He will run towards you with His mercy.
A Du'ā to Carry You Through
There is a supplication often shared as this season begins:
"Allāhumma bārik lanā fī Rajab wa Sha'bān, wa balligh-nā Ramaḍān."
O Allāh, bless us in Rajab and Sha'bān, and allow us to reach Ramaḍān.
May Allāh bless us in Rajab and Sha'bān, and allow us to reach Ramaḍān with hearts that have blossomed through these months of preparation. Āmīn.
Start small. Start now. And trust that Allāh will bring the growth.
